This is an original Cap Plate from the Massachusetts Militia struck in tin.  The reverse has a tin pompon holder.  No other state made greater use of these scalloped-edge cap plates than Massachusetts.  Not only did they have their own dies cut bearing the "MASSACHUSETTS MILITIA" designation and motif.  This is of the same pattern as Figure 638, page 279 in American Military Headgear Insignia by Campbell and O'Donnell.  This is from the James Hart Collection.
