A very interesting transitional period eagle officer's sword for Militia Infantry. The grip is carved bone, The Eagle head pommel has a Wide Open beak, The knucklebow is a silver chain. The very unusual guard has very detailed casting and finishing work with pineapple quillons. The langets depict Eagles and flags on top of the world. The Diamond shaped and acid etched blade are quite unusual for this style. The blade is decorated with foliate and scroll designs, An American Eagle clasping arrows and olive branches. The eagle holds a ribbon with E. Pluribus Unum and a breast shield with 15 stars. The reverse is similar with a Stand of Arms replacing the eagle. Incorporated in the arms is an American Shield with 15 Stars. The scabbard is solid German silver in diamond shape cross section with wrap around ring mounts.
An extremely high quality, beautiful Sword. Very often the number of stars can be used to indicate the time period a sword was produced. Interesting and thought provoking: The fact of this being a sword from the era just prior to the civil war and has 15 stars which is the number of Southern states anticipated to side with the south is very interesting. A southern state Militia?
