Col. John Eaton Tourtellotte enlisted as a Private, 4th Minn. Infantry in 1861. Rose to Lt. Col September of 1862 and Full Colonel October of 1864. Brevet Brigadier General of Vols. March 1865 for Gallant and Meritorious service during the war. He mustered out in 1865 and appointed Captain 28th U.S. Inf. July 1866. Assigned to the 7th U.S. Cavalry in December 1870 and Ade-de-Camp to General Sherman 1871-1884. He returned as Major 7th United States Cavalry in 1883 & retired 1885. Civil War Officer with heroic service during the war and later service into the Indian War Period. This is his fine Brooks Brothers coat. Double breasted - 2 rows of 9 - High quality Staff Officer Buttons by D. Evans & Co. / Attleboro, Mass. The collar is Velvet Lined, coat lining is black. Beautiful Bullion shoulder boards of a full Colonel of Staff with bullion aigulettes. Three button cuffs.4 tail buttons with inside pockets. Id penned inside sleeve in ink faded to reddish brown. This also came with his Civil War Presentation Sword which remains in our collection. Pictures will be offered to the purchaser of this very fine Frock Coat with unbelievable history.
