Item # SEG167   -  1842 dated U.S.Naval Cutlass-First Year Production
U.S.N. Cutlass -Hard to find 1st. year- dated 1842 Price: US $975       Qty Required
This has seen some use. The grip is solid cast brass with fish scale design and 3 steel rivets. The integral pommel has the American Eagle with U.S. Shield on the breast appearing on both sides. The guard has been intentionally bent to a flat configuration and the quillon turned down sharply. The reverse side of the guard is stamped 59. The front C1 with an over stamp of 368. The 20 2/4 in.blade has a few serious nicks as you can see. The maker mark on the obverse has a sharp and clear MASS but only the last 2 letters of the Cabotville and no complete letters of the Ames. The reverse has a clear U.S.N. over the last two numbers of the 1842 date. The 42 is quite clear.

Origin: Cabotville, Mass.      Maker: N. P. Ames      Year: 1842      Model: M1842      Size: cutlass      Condition: Good
