These very desirable and very scarce Roman Pattern short swords obviously purchased by the Central Government of the Confederacy. I presume this because of the C. S. being cast into the guard. They are well made, detailed guards with sharp lines in the cross guard and the CS. These swords have yet to be positively identified as to maker but Shannon Pritchard makes a good case for them to be products of Berger and Company in his book. The top of the pommel has a copper "washer" possibly a penny to make a solid connection when the blade tang was piened over. The blade is oval in cross-section with no fuller. The blade length is a touch shy of 18 3/4 inched. The leather scabbard is back seamed with a tin throat and iron frog stud. The drag is a heart shaped piece of leather on each side stitched together. The original carrying frog is attached. The hilt is excellent with a great patina. The blade is very nice, with a few minor dark spots and slightly rounded tip.The scabbard is so rare that I have only ever owned one like this in 47 years of collecting. The leather is strong, 2 inches of the seam is open near the drag and the tip has cut through the drag. The frog is solid with partial belt loops. A super scarce combination of sword, scabbard and frog.
