The Jefferson Davis Historical Carbine
The capture of President Jefferson Davis (While wearing a lady's shawl).
In a notarized letter dating from September 6th, 1910 Caspar Knobel states
that:
"THIS (Spencer) CARBINE WAS CARRIED BY ME WHEN I CAPTURED JEFFERSON
DAVIS, PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY, ON THE MORNING OF MAY 10TH
1865
AT ABBYVILLE, GEORGIA. SWORN TO BY ME Caspar Knobel of, Late A Company,
4th Michigan Cavalry."
This gun and Caspar Knobel were both considered tremendously important to
history
to have a sworn statement taken in 1910 to document this historic event.
Also pictured: A GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) photo of Caspar Knobel
(on the left)
with an unidentified soldier, Knobel's reunion ribbon from the 4th
Michigan Cavalry,
and a copy of the 1910 sworn statement. Attached to the butt of the
carbine
is the original newspaper clipping detailing the event and historical
significance of the carbine.
