Major General Robert Patterson – His illustrious military career included service as a Colonel of the Pennsylvania Militia
in the War of 1812.  He served as a Major General of Volunteers during the Mexican War.
At the beginning of the Civil War; he was asked, by this friend, General Winfield Scott, to command the
Department of Pennsylvania, which included Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.

His first conflict of the Civil War brought him face to face with Confederate Colonel Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson at Harper’s Ferry.
After some initial success, Patterson was to contain General Johnston and keep him and his Army from reaching Bull Run.
Patterson  appears to have been totally out maneuvered by Johnston.  By not achieving this objective,
Patterson was relieved of his command.  He requested a Court of Inquiry, but it was never acted upon.
He served his country faithfully for 50 years, before returning to civilian life.
