Captain Burwell Boykin McCaa
was Killed in Action January 3, 1863 near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Captain McCaa raised a company of Cavalry which became part of the 8th C.S. Cavalry. His marker in the McCaa cemetery in Aliceville, Alabama reads: "Capt. B. B. McCaa – Co. D. – 8 Conf. Cav. – C.S.A. He was the son of the South Carolina Physician Dr. John McCaa. General Beauregard issued general order # 74 citing the Gallant conduct of McCaa and adding: "This success should teach our cavalry forces what they can accomplish by bravery and daring, and should incite them to like deeds of valor".
