General David Emanuel Twiggs Sword and Scabard Arguably the most historic, beautiful, and expensive sword ever produced in the United States. It was presented by President Polk by resolution of Congress to the United States General and later the highest ranking Confederate General. It was given to a mistress for safekeeping but captured by General Benjamin Butler. It was sent to President Lincoln, given back to congress by President Lincoln, then turned over to the US treasury. The sword was later returned to General Twiggs daughter. Excerpt from General Butlers Letter to President Lincoln, which accompanied the swords: " one of which had been presented to the hero of Monterey by congress " Excerpt from Abraham Lincolns letter to the Senate and House of Representatives: " I HAVE IN MY POSESSION THREE VALUABLE SWORDS formerly the property of Genl David E Twiggs " |
