A very early Ames Model 1840 Medical Staff Officer's Sword which is inscribed on reverse langet A. N. McL / U.S.A. The hilt is very heavily chased and heavy gilt on both the guard and scabbard. Adam Neill McLaren, South Carolina Asst. Surgeon March 1833, Major Surgeon 1839 Brevet Lt. Col March 1865 for faithful & meritorious service during the Civil War. The blade is maker marked: N. P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield. It id etched with a caduceus U.S. Medical Staff. There is also a stand of arms and American Eagle with E. Pluribus Unum.
